Italian opera composer of the Romantic period. At the time, he was considered Italy's greatest nationalist composer and one of the most influential of the 19th century.
His works are frequently performed in opera houses around the world, and transcending genre boundaries, some of his themes have long been ingrained in popular culture - such as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Va, pensiero" (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (Drinking Song) from La Traviata, and "Gloria al Egito e ad Iside" (Triumphal March) from Aida.
